Where CAVA Nutrition Data Comes From
CAVA publishes an official Nutrition & Allergen Guide as a PDF document. This guide lists calories, macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat), sodium, fiber, sugar, and allergens for every menu item. The data is based on standardized portions as prepared in CAVA restaurants. Our calculator uses this official data directly โ we don't estimate or approximate any values.
How Accurate Are Restaurant Calorie Counts?
FDA regulations allow restaurant calorie counts to vary by up to 20% from posted values. This is an industry-wide standard, not specific to CAVA. A 2011 Tufts University study found that restaurant meals averaged 18% more calories than posted, with some items exceeding posted values by over 100 calories. Fast-casual chains with standardized portions (like CAVA) tend to be more accurate than full-service restaurants.
Tip: When tracking calories from any restaurant, consider adding a 10-15% buffer to account for portion variation. If a bowl shows 600 calories, plan for 600-690 calories.
Factors That Affect Your Actual Calories
Several factors cause your actual CAVA meal to differ from the posted nutrition data:
- 1Portion generosity โ staff may scoop slightly more or less than the standard portion
- 2Dressing application โ dressings drizzled in-store may vary from the measured amount
- 3Custom modifications โ double portions of any item will double those calories
- 4Location variation โ slight recipe differences between locations
- 5Time of day โ portions may vary based on staff, rush periods, and ingredient freshness
Which Items Are Most and Least Variable?
Pre-portioned items like pita chips, falafel (counted by piece), and drinks are the most accurate โ what you see is what you get. The most variable items are toppings that are scooped or ladled: hummus, rice, toppings like corn or tomatoes. Proteins are moderately consistent since they're typically portioned by weight during prep.
How to Get the Most Accurate Count
For the most reliable calorie tracking at CAVA, order specific toppings (which are easier to portion consistently), avoid asking for "extra" of any item unless you account for it, and use our calculator to build your exact order before visiting. The calculator gives you a baseline number that's close to what CAVA intends per their official guide.
